~ Christmas News 2018 ~

It’s hard to believe that the festivities are just around the corner and we are only a few weeks away from the end of term & the Christmas break! How did that happen?

It was good to see so many of you in lessons throughout the winter months as we know it can be difficult when the weather is drizzly, cold and dark.

As our end of term approaches we are working on the swimmer’s awards. We are continually assessing the children within lessons at this stage so it’s important that absence is kept to a minimum to help with continuity and measurable progress. We realise that many of our swimmers have other activities to attend but please do attend whenever possible.

It is important for us to know if you will be continuing onto the next course. Once we know this, we will be able to be open our waiting list during the holiday. Before that however, the new schedule of existing swimmers must be in place. To enable us to plan the appropriate groups we would ask you to let us know asap if you have a preferred swim time for next term. As always, we will do our best to accommodate you and this is not usually a problem unless you delay! ‘Last minute dot com’ requests are rarely successful!

Diary dates

· Last swim before Christmas Dec 8th FUN SWIM

· Spring Course starts January 12th

· Half Term (no swimming) Feb 16th & 23rd

· Last swim before Easter March 30th

The Easter course will run for 10 weeks at a cost of £70.00. For the one-hour CLUB SWIMMERS the fee is £92.50.

Fees are payable at the desk at any time from now. We now have the facility for BACS payments online if you prefer or you can still send cheques to the address below. If choosing the latter, please could we have your cheque by the end of the year to be sure of your place on the next course. Cheques should be made payable to the Olympus School of Swimming. Please ask at the desk for our banking details.

We say “Hello & Welcome” to a few new members of staff this term that you may have noticed getting their feet wet or ‘under the table’! Fiona has joined the poolside for the morning session, she is a primary school teacher and has 15 years swim teaching under her belt too. She has made a great start especially with our little shallow swimmers, all smiles and no tears since her arrival! Lovely to have you with us Fiona.

Lynne is our amazing new front of house ‘met and greet’ representative during the morning shift. She keeps busy during the week as a Senior School Attendance Officer and most importantly is about to become a Grandmother for the first time! Great to have you on board Lynne (who gets things done before you’ve even asked) you’ll be happy to know there are a few hundred certificates to write out in the next few weeks! Priya, our swimmer/helper has added a new string to her bow and is organising the desk brilliantly during the afternoons, well done Priya and thank you.

We have some new young helpers too joining in and getting to grips with the world of work. Louie, Charlotte, Joshua and Leila. Some are working for their Duke of Edinburgh awards so help us voluntarily and we really appreciate you coming in, it’s always good to see you starting and developing your careers.

Our cover teachers thankfully continue to support us and most have taught here for many years so thank you to Liz, Gabriella, Zac, Mille, Mark, Brooke and Perry.

CHARITY We will be raising money as usual this Christmas with a RAFFLE….this will be on Dec 8th so please put a few extra coins in your pocket. We have chosen a local charity and will put up details on a poster on our final fun swim day.

During our Easter Term we will not be issuing awards but will have a day either side of half term to work on Personal Survival, Life Saving, Speed, Endurance, Synchro and Water Polo.

We have decided that in playing our part in the reduction of waste and plastic, we encourage you to BYOB ….(bring your own bottle) from the new term. We will no longer sell drinks so please bring your re-usable drinks bottles. Parents please hold onto these bottles during lessons. One hour Club swimmers you can bring them onto poolside. THANK YOU!

Changing rooms: Swimmers should use their designated changing room from the age of 8 unaided. Parents, if you need to assist your child who is younger than 8 please take your little one into the changing room which you would use yourself.

Also, please remember the following: -

In addition, please note the following usual reminders.

· Parents, could you ensure that children do not sit on the wall whilst watching siblings swim.

· Please tie longer hair back or wear a swimming hat. Encourage children to use the loo and blow noses prior to swimming.

· Absolutely no running in the changing room areas please and arrive on time for lessons. It’s important not to miss the first 5 to 10 minutes of the ‘warm up’ section of a lesson!
